Edible sand makes a great topping and decoration on cakes, cupcakes, ice cream, and pudding. It can also be played with or used as a decoration for parties. It adds a nice touch to beach-themed events or desserts, and luckily making a batch is easy and takes less than ten minutes.

  • Makes: 3-5 cups

Ingredients

  • 8 whole graham crackers
  • ½ chocolate graham cracker
  • ¼ cup (50 grams) white sugar
  • 8 light-colored cookies or biscuits (e.g Oreos, sugar cookies, etc.)
  • ¼ cup (50 grams) brown sugar
  • 5 cups almonds
  • 3 cups walnuts
  • 3-5 cups leftover cake scraps
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup cornmeal
  • ¼ tablespoon water
  • 2 envelopes of yellow Kool-Aid or similar powdered juice packets

    Blend the chocolate and whole graham crackers in a food processor. Blend on high speed for about a minute or two, until the graham crackers resemble the consistency of sand.

    • You can also crumble the crackers by placing them in a Ziploc bag and whacking it with a rolling pin. This process takes a little more effort but it works just as well.

    Pour the crumbled graham crackers into a large bowl.

    Add the white sugar. Stir in the sugar with a mixing utensil. If necessary, add extra sugar to make the sand lighter in color.

    Use the edible sand. The edible sand can be used for desserts (e.g cakes, pudding, cookies, etc.), decoration, or playing. Enjoy!

    Preheat the oven to 250° Fahrenheit (121° Celsius).
